Whooper Swan – Cygnus cygnus

An almost annual migrant and occasionally overwinters.

1924 – 2 at Amble Marshes (Tregorden Marsh); 15th/16th January.

1939 – 6 at Amble Marshes; 11th January.

1942 – 3 at Amble Marshes; 22nd November to 17th December with 1 to the 20th at least.

1948 – 1 at Amble Marshes; 26th September to years end.

1949 – 1 at Amble Marshes from 1948 until 15th February.

1959 – 5 at Amble Marshes; 24th/ 25th November with 4 until 2nd December. 2 in 5th December and 4 on the 6th.

1961 – 3 (2 adult) at Amble Marshes; 26th December.

1962 – 1 immature at Egloshayle; 10th January to 15th.

1963 – 2 at Amble Marshes; 23rd November.

1964 – 2 at Amble Marshes; 15th February.

(1966 – 1 at Retallack near Winnard’s Perch, (Just outside study area); 12th November and into 1967)

(1967 – 1 at Retallack from 1966 until 8th January)

1968 – 1 at Amble Dam 28th January; 3 (2 adult and an immature) at Amble Dam 2nd November; 4 adult and 2 immature 26th November; 1 adult 5th to 15th December.

1969 – 6 (3 adult and 3 immature) at Egloshayle 14th January to 29th with 1 until 3rd April; 1 at Amble Marshes 29th November and into 1970.

1970 – 1 from 1969 to 2nd February. (noted at Egloshayle and Amble Dam); 1 at Amble Dam 20th December to the end of the year.

1973 – 3 on the Amble Marshes 14th December.

1974 – 6 on Dinham Flats 24th February to 21st March.

1976 – 1 adult 10th December until the 19th, being noted at Dinham Flats, Amble Marshes and Egloshayle during it’s stay.

1977 – 1 adult on the Amble Marshes 21st December.

1978 – 11 on the estuary 27th October until 11th November. 1 28th December and into 1979.

1979 – The 1978 bird was last seen on 29th March.

1981 – An adult 24th November and into 1982.

1982 – The 1981 bird was noted until 17th April and its decomposing remains were found on the 20th. 5 adults flew through the estuary in 11th January, 4 adults and an immature was noted 15th January with 2 adults and an immature noted until the 17th. 1 was present 5th December.

2003 – Four visited the estuary 11th March. An adult at Amble Marshes 28th November to 18th December with two on 8th.

2004 – An adult at Burniere Point, 7th/8th January.  Singles noted at Amble Marshes on 25th January, 7th February and 1st to 29th March. A single also visited the Amble Marshes 8th to 29th Dec.

2005 – A second year bird present, around the estuary and Amble Marshes from 2004 was last seen Apr 20th. Two adults were present off Tregunna on Jan 3rd.

2015 – 5 over Wadebridge heading southwest 21st October; 2 at Amble Marshes, 3rd November and probably same birds at Dinham Flats 11th to 18th November at least. 6 on Amble Marshes 24-11-15.
